A day at Broadstairs is a refreshing break from the bustle of London. This quintessential seaside town is just a short train ride away, offering timeless beauty and a laid-back atmosphere. As you step into this destination, the fresh coastal air welcomes you, making it clear why it’s a must-visit. With sandy beaches, stunning waterfront views, and a charm that captivates, it’s perfect for a relaxing getaway. Whether you’re a tourist or a native, there’s plenty to explore, from the scenic Viking Coastal Trail to cozy cafés.
For lunch, book a table at The Tartar Frigate, a restaurant facing the seafront, known for its fresh seafood. If you love history, walk through the town’s streets and admire its rich culture. A visit here is more than just a trip; it’s an experience filled with history, relaxation, and the perfect weekend vibe.
Getting to Broadstairs from London
Reaching Broadstairs from London is simple, with multiple travel options. A direct train from the UK capital offers a smooth journey in just 1 hour and 20 minutes on a fast service. If you prefer a road trip, driving takes around 2 hours, depending on your starting point.
Nestled between Margate and Ramsgate, this seaside resort town is a true jewel in Thanet’s crown. It boasts a wealth of chalk cliffs, art galleries, restaurants, and cafes to enjoy. Whether you’re arriving by train or car, the coastal scenery and lively atmosphere make every moment worthwhile.

Travel Options: Train or Bus
Taking the train to Broadstairs from London is the most convenient and scenic route. Departing from Victoria Station, the ride takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, offering stunning views of the English countryside as you head toward the coast. Whether you want to soak in the vistas or enjoy some reading, the train is a great choice for an enjoyable trip.
For the return journey, opting for the bus is a budget-friendly alternative. Though slightly longer at 2 to 2.5 hours, the difference in cost makes it preferable for those looking to save money. The comfort and affordability of the bus add to its appeal, offering a fresh perspective as it winds through charming towns and rolling countryside not visible from the train tracks. I always book my tickets via Omio, as my past experiences with it in European travels have been excellent.

Exploring Broadstairs: Food, Shops, and More
Once we arrived in town, we found plenty of things to do in Broadstairs. Whether you’re in the mood to eat, drink, shop, or take a walk along the beach, there’s something for everyone. With an hour before our lunch reservation, we decided to wonder through the high street and stumbled upon a charming gift shop called Native Self. They had a variety of self-care products, including Ayurvedic sleep oil and self-love cards. Though they just opened and their website isn’t live yet, they mentioned it would be up after Christmas, so I’ll be looking out for that!
Finding The Tartar Frigate was easy—just a straight road from the station and a left turn at the end. The pub led us upstairs to the restaurant, where we were greeted with a warm, friendly smile from our waiters, who welcomed us to our table. They were celebrating their 30th anniversary, as we noticed banners around the room. We already knew what we wanted—seafood! Their daily specials board looked inviting, but unfortunately, they were out of Dover Sole and lobster. However, they had locally sourced Sea Bream, and Marissa chose their Bouillabaisse, a French fish soup served with rouille dressing and sourdough croutons.

Relaxing by the Beach
Since Broadstairs is on the coast, one of the best things to do is visit the beach. Viking Bay sits in the heart of town and is the main place to enjoy the sun and sand. From colorful beach huts to sailboats, it offers a classic seaside experience.
After all that walking, I needed a rest, so I headed to Margate’s Main Sands. This wide, sandy spot was quite busy that day. The sunny weather came with a strong wind, so I skipped bringing my swimming costume and towel but still managed to dip my toes in the water. You can rent deckchairs and windbreaks, and I even spotted a beach-side sauna!
Enjoying Classic Fish and Chips
One of the best things to do in Broadstairs is to eat fish and chips, a classic seaside treat loved by visitors. There are many places in town to try it, but my favorite is Fish & Chips Co, known for its fresh flavors.
Located right on the beach at Viking Bay, this hole-in-the-wall chippy serves fresh seafood and crispy fries all day. The experience is simple yet delightful. It’s fun to grab a box of hot food and relax on the sand, enjoying the sea breeze.
On a sunny afternoon, nothing beats the taste of freshly fried fish while watching the waves. Whether you visit for the first time or return for more, this local favorite always delivers. The combination of salty air, warm food, and scenic views makes it an unforgettable part of the trip.

Sipping Cocktails by the Sea
I couldn’t resist the sunshine and sea air, so I stopped for a drink at Little Swift before heading to the station. This cozy bar and deli offered the perfect spot to unwind after a fun-filled day. Sitting by the coast, I enjoyed the refreshing coastal negroni, which had just the right balance of flavors.
Along with a great selection of cocktails, they also serve delicious platters, perfect for a quick nibble or a full meal. The atmosphere was warm, making it a lovely place to relax. If you’re in the mood for more, Daisy in Cliftonville is another fantastic choice for an aperitif or two. The combination of delicious drinks, a beautiful view, and a welcoming setting made this stop unforgettable. It was the ideal way to end a wonderful day by the sea.
Walk on the Waterfront
One of the best ways to enjoy Broadstairs is to walk along the waterfront, soaking in the breathtaking views. The towering cliffs above the beaches provide perfect vantage points to admire the golden sand and rolling waves of the sea.
Strolling along The Parade and Victoria Parade offers stunning views over Viking Bay, a great place for sightseeing and photography. The Eastern Esplanade and Western Esplanade provide incredible vistas of the surrounding bays, making the walk even more enjoyable. These scenic routes offer a peaceful escape with fresh sea air and beautiful landscapes.

Explore the Parks and Gardens
One of the best things to do in Broadstairs is to explore the beautiful parks and gardens that add charm to the town. Victoria Gardens is a large green space overlooking Viking Bay, offering a peaceful place to relax. It was opened in 1892 by Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria, and remains a historical gem. The gardens are well-maintained with manicured hedges, making them perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic with a view. Visitors can enjoy the scenic atmosphere and admire the town’s bandstand, a central feature of the gardens. The combination of seaside views and lush greenery makes this green retreat an ideal escape from the busy streets. Whether you’re looking to unwind or explore local history, this park offers something for everyone. A visit to Victoria Gardens is a must for anyone exploring Broadstairs.
Browsing Margate’s Indie Stores
One of the best ways to experience Margate is by browsing its unique indie stores, which offer everything from lifestyle products to vintage treasures. The town has a great selection of independent shops, each with its own charm. Aarven specializes in ethical homewares, while Haeckels focuses on natural skincare. Harbour & Tide offers lifestyle and gifts with a seaside theme, and Lost Property is a haven for vintage and antiques. The Margate Bookshop is perfect for book lovers, while Papillon stocks stylish homewares. If you love a mix of old and new, Ramsay & Williams combines vintage finds with ice cream, and Zigzag is the place for stylish shoes. Next on my list of things to do in Broadstairs is shopping, where I’ll explore its shops and art galleries. No trip feels complete without stopping by these charming independent stores.

Explore the Dickens House Museum
If you love literature, one of the best ways to experience Broadstairs is by exploring its Charles Dickens history. The famous writer adored Broadstairs and spent a lot of time here. As a true literature nerd, I couldn’t miss visiting the Dickens House Museum. This charming cottage inspired Betsey Trotwood’s home in David Copperfield and offers a fascinating glimpse into Charles Dickens’s life. The museum is packed with memorabilia and details about the author’s life and works, making it a highlight of my trip.
Visitors can also admire Bleak House, standing castle-like above Viking Bay, where Dickens stayed in the 1850s and ’60s. It’s believed he wrote parts of his famous novels inside. Another must-visit is the Charles Dickens Museum, set in the former home of Mary Pearson Strong. She was the inspiration for Betsy Trotwood, one of Dickens’s most beloved characters.
Visit Viking Bay
Viking Bay is the crown jewel of Broadstairs’ beaches. Its horseshoe-shaped bay, golden sand, and striking chalk cliffs make it an ideal spot for a sunny day. You can relax on the beach, dip your toes in the brisk English Channel, and enjoy the picturesque scenery. My favorite part was seeing the stunning personal sheds locals had decorated into charming beachside tiny homes.
The main reason I visited Broadstairs was to walk along the Viking Coastal Trail to Margate. This six-mile route follows the beach, offering breathtaking views. However, it’s crucial to check the tide times since some parts, like the cliff arch at Kingsgate Bay, become inaccessible at high tide. Walking up and down the steps onto the cliff path can be tedious, so plan accordingly.

Stroll Through the Town
Broadstairs may be small, but it’s full of character. I loved wandering through the narrow streets, admiring the quaint shops and historic buildings. The town has a palpable sense of community, with friendly locals always offering a smile or a great recommendation. If you’re visiting on a Wednesday, don’t miss the local artists’ market. I found adorable wooden earrings there, and I wear them all the time!
Get a Drink in Broadstairs
When you need a rest, one of the top things to do in Broadstairs is get a drink. Whether you prefer a coffee or a pint, there are plenty of places in town to choose from. If you’re looking for something on the caffeinated end, coffee shops like Namaka serve great coffee in stylish surroundings.
Art and Culture at the Turner Contemporary
The Turner Contemporary is a modern art gallery located right on the seafront. It’s free to visit, and they usually have very good exhibitions. I loved the colourful, abstract paintings of Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, which will be there until September 2023. The gallery shop is also a great place for arty and Margate-themed gifts and souvenirs.
Eat at the Best Restaurants in Broadstairs
If you want to enjoy something other than fish and chips, there are great restaurants in Broadstairs. My favorite is Wyatt and Jones, a small-plates restaurant near the beach. It has a seafood focus and an intimate atmosphere in its split-level dining room.
Stay the Night
There’s so much to do in Broadstairs that it’s worth staying a night. I stayed at a hotel in town, and I loved it.

How Long Do You Need in Broadstairs?
If you’re a history buff, literature lover, or just need a break from city life, spend at least 2-3 days in Broadstairs. This is the perfect time to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and explore everything this charming town has to offer.
Even if you only have a day, it’s still worth the trip. You can spend the full day strolling along the beach, visiting historic sites, and enjoying a delicious meal before heading back.
